The “WHAT IF…” Frequent Dog Parent Concerns

WHAT IF MY DOG CAN'T BE OFF-LEASH?

No problem! We at Westway totally get it. Your dog's safety is a top priority in our session. Many of the dogs we work with stay on a leash through their entire session, but thanks to our mad editing skills, you'd never know! Slide the arrows above to see! Magic!

WHAT IF MY DOG DOESN'T BEHAVE?

Over the past 10+ years, we've worked with dogs of all skill levels, rescue dogs, agility dogs, blind dogs, deaf dogs, blind + deaf dogs, high-energy dogs, snuggly dogs, dogs who like to keep their distance, velcro dogs, dogs with special needs, and dogs who drool uncontrollably at the mention of the word t-r-e-a-t. In other words, we've worked with A LOT of dogs. And we've been able to get great photographs of each and every one of them!

WHAT IF MY DOG DOESN'T KNOW SIT?

The vast majority of dogs we photograph are family dogs who don't have a giant repertoire of tricks up their sleeves (wait, do dogs have sleeves?). Some know sit or down but many don't — and that's OK! Our camera shoots at up to 1/8000th of a second (i.e., suuuuuper fast) and that's all we need to capture that one perfect moment!

WHAT IF I HAVE A DOG-REACTIVE DOG?

Guess what? So do we! The Westway team is well-versed in keeping our heads on a swivel when we're out with our pup — and after 13 years, it has become second-nature. We won't get upset or impatient, we simply do our best to avoid other dogs and wait it out if we do.

WHERE DO WE HAVE OUR SESSION?

That all depends on you and your pup! You might have a super-special place in mind or you may want some guidance from us. Whether we shoot on a mountaintop or in your home, we're always happy to talk through ideas with you!

DO I HAVE TO BE IN THE PHOTOS, TOO?

Technically, no — but we really wish you would! The relationships we share with our four-legged family members are unlike any other relationships in the world. Let's capture yours! Even if you're just in a few frames, blurred in the background, or we only see your hands or feet, we know you'll treasure those images because you and your dog are together.

DO I GET ALL THE DIGITAL FILES WITH MY SESSION?

We've found that our clients' preferences for digitals and printed artwork vary greatly. Some just want digitals, others just want prints, and then there are those who want both. So, we've kept it simple: all digital and physical artwork is purchased separately from the session fee so you can choose exactly what makes you happiest.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I BUDGET FOR ARTWORK AFTER THE SESSION?

Everyone is different and you'll never be pressured to buy anything you don't love. Historically, for physical and/or digital artwork, Git Along Li'l Doggie clients spend between $600–$900 and Outdoor Adventure clients spend $1000 and up. If you have a set budget, please let us know and we'll help you get the most out of it.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE ARE YOU BOOKED?

We are usually booked 4–6 weeks in advance. It's a bit longer in the fall.

I JUST GOT THE WORST NEWS IMAGINABLE. CAN YOU FIT ME IN?

This is the hardest part of being a pet parent. We will do everything in our power to get you in for a session.

DO YOU WORK WEEKENDS?

We do not — and here's why you don't want us to: weekends are the busiest time for hikers, bikers, gatherings, and every other activity. We want to choose days and locations that are quieter so we can get the most variety out of your images. For this reason, we shoot Monday – Thursday. If you absolutely, positively must have a weekend session, there is a small additional fee.

DO YOU TRAVEL?

Absolutely! We've photographed dogs from the shores of San Diego to the mountains of Breckenridge to the city streets of New York. Westway is all about the adventurous spirit, so tell us where you want to go!

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER PHOTOGRAPHERS IN SAN DIEGO?

We know it can be overwhelming to find your perfect photographer. We have specialized in animal photography — and done it exclusively — for over 10 years. You won't find us photographing weddings, newborns, themed kids setups, or families without dogs. Our gift is being able to capture pets and their people, so that's where we focus. In fact, dog brands like West Paw, Wellness, P.L.A.Y., JustFoodForDogs, GoldPaw, and more, hire us regularly to create lifestyle relationship images for their marketing and advertising campaigns across the globe.

During our session, we're focused on your dog first whereas family photographers are focused on people first. Don't get us wrong, we're focused on you, too, but once we make sure you're looking good, we focus on things like getting your dog's ears up, making sure their body language tells us they are happy and comfortable, and keeping them willing to work through lots of positive reinforcement.

When you hire Westway, you can feel confident you're going to get the highest-quality photos possible.

I hired Terran to take photos of my two dogs and me. One of my dogs is 12 and I wanted to capture some memories while highlighting our bond and his personality. Terran blew me away with her work. Not only is she professional, but she also makes you feel totally comfortable at the same time. I told her my visions for the photos and she made my dreams come to my life. If you’re looking for someone to perfectly capture your pet’s personality with high quality photos, Terran should be your choice. A few weeks after the session, we had a photo viewing online where she made a beautiful slideshow of all the best photos and then allowed me to pick my favorites from the bunch! If I could give 100 stars, I would.

Chelsea C.

Terran has captured countless photos of my dog, Stella, over the last three years. I could not imagine my life without the photos and experiences that Terran has created – truly priceless memories to last a lifetime! Thank you, Terran!!

Christina S.

I had seen Terran’s work with my friend’s dog. The pictures were beautiful! When my vet told me to consider my awesome little buddy of 16 years as being on hospice, I knew immediately I wanted to do a legacy shoot with Terran and Westway Studio. Terran’s attention to detail, ability to work with my dog’s quirks and my very emotional state created several keepsake pieces. Terran is so compassionate and professional. It’s hard to put into words just how important the entire process has been in my ability to grieve my little Licorice. I cannot recommend working with Westway Studio enough. You will not be disappointed!

Lisa L.

We were thrilled with every aspect of our experience with Westway Studio. From our first meeting to the final delivery of photos, Terran provided first class personalized service. She was generous with her time, talent, and expertise in helping us pick a location, figure out what kind of images we wanted to capture, and how final photo selections would look best in our home. She captured some photos that will melt my heart forever, and I can’t thank her enough.

Jennifer O.

Terran was wonderful to work with and very patient with our “somewhat cooperative” basset hounds. They were more interested with tracking scents in the woods than a photoshoot but Terran was able to distract them with tasty treats and cuddles. Communication was a breeze, and we enjoyed the personal touches and the experience of selecting our images along with the variety of ways we could create our artwork. I definitely recommend Westway Studio!

Tanya B.

I can’t say enough about Terran and the quality of the work from Westway Studio. I had my first mini shoot several years ago and have gone back three more times since then. Thanks to covid, we had our first outdoor session this year, which I was very nervous about. My dogs are older and don’t have the best recall but they were leashed the whole time — although you wouldn’t know it by looking at the final edits!

You will not find the quality and care of Westway Studio for the price anywhere else. As our fur family will inevitably grow and evolve, I look forward to including Westway Studio in our transitions. I’m grateful for the beautiful memories captured that will last forever.

Suzy C.

My husband and I have hired Terran twice to photograph us with our two dogs. Having done pet photography myself in the past, I know first hand how challenging it can be. Not only were the photos Terran captured absolutely beautiful, but she and her assistant made the experience fun, too! We would highly recommend Westway Studio to anyone who’s looking for a true professional who loves what she does and provides photos you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Helén T.

Terran is an AMAZING photographer!!! Her skills are out of this world and the kindness she and her assistant exuded while photographing us was so nice! I was blown away when I saw the photos she got! Our dog definitely enjoyed it, too, with all the extra belly rubs and treats!

The photo session is just the start

Hold on to your hat because we’re in for more fun: seeing the proofs and choosing which will grace your walls for years to come!

About three weeks after your portrait session, we’ll schedule a viewing and ordering appointment — either in-person at my home office in Mira Mesa (to give you the fullest Westway experience) or over Zoom (for health and safety concerns). No matter which type of viewing you choose, we’ll watch a slideshow of the very best moments from our session, I’ll help you pick out your favorites, and we’ll decide exactly what to do with them. Fear not, my indecisive friends, I have a tried-and-true method that’ll quickly and easily narrow down your can’t-live-without-images.

Modern heirloom art to last a lifetime

There’s no better way to enjoy your photos than with stunning artwork displayed in your home but it can be hard to imagine what a piece of art will look like just based on a measuring tape. Well, guess what? I’ll show you exactly what different artwork options will look like on the walls of your home.

I’m here every step of the way to help you create pieces that are personal and meaningful!

Custom Wall Artwork

There’s nothing quite like seeing your favorite photographs on your wall every day. For me, they bring smiles and happy memories around every corner of my home — and I’m positive they’ll do the same for you!

With a beautiful collection of finishes and frames, we will customize your artwork to be all that you ever imagined! The Westway artwork line includes traditional photographic prints, classic canvas gallery wraps, and ultra-modern metal prints that will bring a bit of personality to any room.

> Wall art starts at $399

Heirloom Keepsakes

After you’ve chosen your wall art, you’re going to want a Keepsake Box or Heirloom Album filled with all of your can’t-live-without photos! These pieces are a Westway client favorite and almost everyone chooses them as a way to display their images.

Keepsake Boxes include removable mounted prints to display on an easel, whereas the Heirloom Album images are printed on luxuriously thick matte pages you’ll want to gaze through over and over again. Both are beautifully printed with deep, rich colors on the highest quality materials that are made to last a lifetime.

> Heirloom keepsakes start at $899

Greg is really putting my fear of falling to the test lately. He keeps leading me to these incredible places with steep, steep falls but great, great views (which he knows I can’t resist). 😱 He even somehow convinced me to climb across a nearly sheer rock face through the use of foot holes and hand holds. Thankfully, there was also a rope to hold onto but, my goodness, my heart was pounding and my entire body was screaming on the inside. I did it, though, and that’s what matters!

I've always been a homebody. I like my house. I li I've always been a homebody. I like my house. I like my stuff. I like the comfort of it all... but once we picked up our Airstream last year, my whole world changed. The open road quickly became my home; change became my comfort zone. After six months of travel, I kept asking Greg, "do we have to go home?" I honestly didn't want to go back to my house or to sticks-and-bricks living. I was sad. I loved living small. I loved experiencing this incredible country while trailering my home behind me. We had to go home, though. But now, six months later, we are back on the road again and I truly couldn't be happier! This year's adventure is taking us through Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana — some of my favorite-favorite-favorite places on this earth!
